Research Axes and protocol triage

The current procedure for the triage of protocols for evaluation by one of the two sub-committees of the Research Ethics Committee of the Research Review Office is based on criteria set by the division of research axis. Research being conducted in the LDI Research Axis within the clinical/medical sphere will automatically be allocated to be reviewed by the Medical/Biomedical Sub-Committee. Research outside of the hospices of the Jewish General Hospital where the focus of research is psycho-social, mental health and/or community-based research will be automatically triaged to the First-Line Psychosocial Research Ethics Sub-committee.


To help researchers determine which committee will be reviewing their research project we have modified our application for review form to demonstrate our triage process. The chart below further demonstrates the review criteria of each Sub-committee: 

MBM Sub-committee 

  • Drug Trials
  • Natural Health Product Trials
  • Medical Device Trials
  • Research using radiopharmaceutical products
  • Bio- and Data- Banks (including secondary use of these banks)
  • Basic (Laboratory Research)
  • Epidemiological Research
  • Academic Nursing Research
  • Psychiatry Research
  • Psycho-Social Oncology Research

FLP Sub-committee

  • Community Based Research (including community based nursing research) 
  • Research involving First Nations, Inuit and Metis Peoples of Canada
  • Health Technologies Research (e.g. an Application for phone or tablet)
  • Social/Psychological Research
  • Research on Quality of Life and Social Issues
  • Behavioural Research
  • Social Determinants of Health Research (culture, environment, lifestyle, etc.)
  • Research on Education and program evaluation
  • Research on Re-adaptation
  • Ethnographic Research
  • Cognitive Research and the effect on the society 
  • Research on Psychological health and quality of life

 

*Please note: Researchers may specify in their application to the Research Review Office to which Research Ethics sub-Committee they prefer their research to be reviewed by, however, the final decision regarding the appropriate Committee will be made by the Chairs of the MBM and FLP Sub-committees.
